Dry scalp on a toddler

DS has this patchy, flaky skin on the crown of his head, and I think it smells (could be my sensitive pregnancy nose though)  We still use baby soap/shampoo.  Is it just dry?  Any treatments?  Baby oil?  Thanks!

    is it cradle cap?  Brayden had a patch on his head (had bad cradle cap as an infant) and I just put some olive oil on it (read it online - not just a random thing I did) about 45 mins or so before a bath and then the flakes came out when I combed it.
